Regarding this year’s Founder’s Day public holiday, the Ghanaian presidency has issued an official statement.

The holiday, which falls on Sunday, September 21, will be observed on Monday, according to a statement issued on Wednesday, September 17.

Founder's Day: President John Mahama Declares September 22 a Public Holiday.

The public is hereby notified that Founder’s Day, a Statutory Public Holiday, falls on Sunday, September 21, 2025.

However, in view of the fact that 21st September 2025 falls on a Sunday, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has, by Executive Instrument (E.I), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601), as amended, declared Monday, 22nd September 2025, as Additional Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.

This follows a revision to Ghana’s holiday calendar by the ninth parliament, which restored July 1 as Republic Day. Nkrumah’s birthday, which falls on September 21, has been reinstated as Founder’s Day, and a new holiday, Shaqq Day, has been established.
