The appointment of a new Asantehemaa will break a 158-year record for the Asante Kingdom.

The female head of power in Ghana’s Asante Kingdom is referred to as Asantehemaa, or “Queen Mother.” Currently known as the Asantehene (King), Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has ruled since 1999.

The position of Asantehemaa fell vacant with the death of Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II in November 2016.

However, when a new Asantehemaa is enstooled, the old record of 158 years will be broken, breaking the record for the longest time between Asantehemaa appointments. A member of the royal family has traditionally been selected by the Asantehene to act as Asantehemaa.

She plays a crucial role in the governance and administration of the Asante Kingdom and is a representation of the maternal wisdom and strength of the royal line. Ensuring the spiritual and moral guidance of the Asante people is another responsibility of the Asantehemaa.

The final Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, was a highly respected and influential figure in the Asante Kingdom. During her 39 years of devotion before her death, she made a significant impact on the Asante people.

Her death marked the end of an era and left a void in the kingdom’s traditional leadership.

The appointment of a new Asantehemaa is a highly anticipated and important event in the Asante Kingdom. Who becomes the next Asantehemaa will depend on her commitment to the customs, knowledge, morals, and lineage of the Asante people.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, must be involved in the selection process since it is his duty to ensure that the person selected is qualified to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. The choice of a new Asantehemaa will enhance Ghanaian heritage and customs as well as the Asante Kingdom.

There is a wealth of conserved and transmitted cultural history in the Asante Kingdom. By choosing a new Asantehemaa, the Asante Kingdom is affirming its commitment to the traditions and ideals that have long been held in high regard. Carrying on the work of her ancestors, the next Asantehemaa must guide the Asante people with dignity, insight, and power.

Unity, peace, and prosperity—ideals that have been fundamental to the Asante Kingdom for centuries—will be expected of her. The people of Asante and everyone who values the kingdom’s traditions and culture will rejoice at the appointment of a new Asantehemaa since it is a momentous occasion. Choosing a new Asantehemaa is more than just a ritual; it is a watershed event in the ongoing effort to honour and spread Asante culture and heritage.

After the illustrious Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, the next Asantehemaa will have lofty expectations to meet. But with the help of the Asantehene and the royal family, she will be able to execute her job with pride and respect, protecting the Asante Kingdom’s history and customs for future generations.
