Gerald Asamoah is currently on an African tour with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, highlighting his continued influence beyond the football field
In appreciation of his exceptional service and efforts to promote goodwill between Ghana and Germany, former German international Gerald Asamoah was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, one of Germany’s highest civilian awards.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier personally delivered the trophy to the former Schalke 04 striker during the heartfelt ceremony on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, in Accra.
Standing in front of an audience that applauded his arduous trip from Ghana to the centre of German football, Asamoah was clearly moved.

Asamoah, a trailblazer in every way, became the first player of African descent to represent Germany at the senior level.
Beyond his achievements on the field, he has developed into a well-known advocate for inclusivity who uses his platform to bring people from all backgrounds together.
He has provided children with heart problems, especially in Ghana, with life-changing medical support through the Gerald Asamoah Foundation for Children with Heart Conditions.
He is well-liked outside of football circles for his empathy and dedication to humanity.
President Steinmeier highlighted Asamoah’s work as an ambassador for the “School Without Racism” project and commended him for his unceasing advocacy. Asamoah grinned and inhaled deeply in appreciation as the president remarked, “That’s something you can wear day and night now,” which made the visitors chuckle.
The 47-year-old gave a poignant acceptance speech in which he thanked everyone who had contributed to his life narrative, from his modest upbringing in Mampong to his years as a professional athlete in Europe.
“That I’m receiving something like this, I still can’t believe it. But it’s pure joy,” he said, laughing nervously after accidentally dropping the certificate during the ceremony, as reported by Ghanasoccernet.
“It’s simply pride that the work I do is paying off. When God blesses someone, you have to try to give something back.”
