NPP Accepts Defeat in Ghana’s Akwatia By-Election

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, won the Akwatia by-election, giving the government a significant victory in one of the year’s most carefully watched elections in Ghana.

With 18,199 votes during the Akwatia By-Election, Bediako defeated Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), who received 15,235 votes, according to certified results made public by the Electoral Commission.

With 82 votes, Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) finished in a far-off third place. A total of 303 ballots were rejected out of 33,819 valid ones that were counted.

Akwatia By-Election: NDC’s Bernard Bediako wins NPP

Ernest Yaw Kumi, the current Akwatia Member of Parliament, passed away earlier in 2025, prompting the by-election.

Both the NDC and the NPP invested a lot of money and personnel in the constituency during the fiercely heated campaigning that preceded the election.

On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, voting was conducted in 119 polling places, with the polls closing at 5:00 p.m.

Party representatives, election officials, security guards, and impartial observers were present during the counting and collation process.

Following the announcement of Bediako’s victory, NDC supporters joyfully celebrated by pouring onto Akwatia’s streets to sing and dance.

Given that Akwatia is often a swing seat that has switched between the NPP and NDC in past elections, political analysts characterise the outcome as noteworthy.

As it gets ready for the national elections in 2028, the ruling party therefore sees the NDC’s most recent triumph as a significant morale boost.

Results Breakdown

  • Bernard Bediako Baidoo (NDC) – 18,199 votes
  • Solomon Kwame Asumadu (NPP) – 15,235 votes
