Kingsley Okonkwo, a Nigerian pastor and relationship coach, has caused a lot of controversy by claiming that the Bible forbids men from providing for the needs of women.

The long-held notion that males are exclusively in charge of giving financial support in relationships was contested by Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo in a sermon that went viral online.

He asked his congregation’s female members how they made ends meet before getting married, emphasising that reliance on males for financial support is more cultural than biblical.

“That idea is cultural, it is not biblical. The Bible says, he who does not work should not eat,” Okonkwo stated.

The pastor went on to argue that daughters should be well educated, empowered, and financially secure rather than relying on men for survival. “Before you married, how were you surviving? All this is poor people’s talk. Parents who raise their daughters well will send them to the best schools and ensure they have good jobs. They will not leave them at the mercy of the boys,” he said.

He condemned parents who drive their daughters into relationships for financial gain by ignoring their duties. Consider yourself a father whose daughter is requesting money before going on a date. He enquired, “How would you feel if you were a father?”

Okonkwo also advised women not to put too much pressure on their spouses, particularly young males who are still getting established. “You want to place the burden on a young man who has just begun life, something your father cannot do,” he continued.
