Madina Zongo Junction is stormed by military forces.

Residents say they have been complaining about the fatalities for years and are now afraid and angry. They claim that despite the footbridge at the Madina Zongo intersection being finished for a while, many people continue to avoid it due to inadequate lighting and other problems.

Due to this circumstance, more people are choosing to cross the highway on foot, which has resulted in several accidents that have claimed hundreds of lives.

After word of the deaths spread around Accra, the military was sent to the region on Thursday, September 26, 2025, to help restore peace.

While authorities search for long-term solutions to the issue, their presence is intended to preserve life and maintain order. Tensions increased after the deployment, with locals accusing officials of neglect and demanding immediate action to save lives.

According to some community members, the government has abandoned them. They clarified that not much has changed to protect pedestrians at the intersection despite several accidents and previous assurances. They contend that in order for people to utilise the footbridge without fear, it must be made welcome and safe in addition to being a structure.

Leaders in Madina have also joined the calls for urgent attention. They are asking the authorities to improve lighting, ensure regular security, and educate the public about the dangers of crossing the road directly. They believe the deaths of fifty-eight residents should be the final signal that the issue can no longer be ignored, and they want firm steps taken immediately.

For now, the community is still grieving while soldiers stand guard at the Zongo junction. Families of the victims are left with pain and unanswered questions as they wait to see if the government will finally act. The tragedy has reminded many Ghanaians of the cost of neglecting public safety, and people are hoping that lessons from Madina will lead to real change across the country.
