Sophia Akuffo Communicates With Ghanaians About Mahama
Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has contributed to the expanding national dialogue against unlawful mining, or “galamsey,” advising Ghanaians to exercise restraint in their responses, according to a report by TV3 News on Thursday, September 11, 2025.
As he considers declaring a state of emergency to address the threat of illegal mining, Justice Akuffo urged the people to give former President John Dramani Mahama the benefit of the doubt.

Her comments coincide with heightened debates over the best ways to mitigate galamsey’s negative social and environmental effects, which continue to endanger the nation’s farmlands, waterways, and rural towns.
Judge Akuffo stressed the need for national unity and careful participation in addressing what she described as a deeply rooted and urgent situation, despite some critics voicing reservations about the ramifications of such a dramatic move.
As political and civil society leaders consider the best course of action, the former Chief Justice’s intervention underscores a larger appeal for fair discussion.
